Description. General John Burgoyne was a British army officer, politician and playwright. He is best known for his role in the American Revolutionary War. He commanded a British force that moved south from Canada, in an attempt to split away New England and end the rebellion.
In this disastrous expedition, he gained possession of Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Edward for which he was made a lieutenant-general. Pushing on, Burgoyne was cut off from his communications with Canada, and at Saratoga was hemmed in by a superior force led by Horatio Gates.
